Curriculum
There are two different length curriculums created for the JHU Smoke Alarm project -- one long curriculum and one short curriculum. The curriculum can be tailored based on individual home safety discussions with participating households.
Short curriculum
Long curriculum
This curriculum can be used when you have limited time to engage participating families in their home about fire safety prevention. The curriculum contains information on the importance of home safety fire prevention, including information on general fire prevention, the importance of smoke alarms and fire escape planning.
The long curriculum should be used when possible, and when you have more time to engage with participating families in their home about fire safety prevention. This curriculum provides more in-depth information on fire safety. In addition to the topics covered in the short curriculum, this curriculum includes information on cooking and heating safety, sleeping areas and fire extinguishers.
Data Collection
Update as of 3/4/25, we are transitioning to a new data collection software.

We ask for a small amount of de-identified data from our partners. We will be using an online form via Qualtrics (click here). For areas without cell service, you can complete this paper form, and then manually enter the information from the paper into the online survey later.
This is what the form looks like:

One form should be filled out for each dwelling where alarms have been installed. For mobile homes and campers, you can complete one additional submission per each one.

Leave Behind Materials
Below are various informational materials for participating families which provide information about smoke alarm use, fire safety and carbon monoxide safety. Leave behind materials are integrated within the curriculum presented by home educators and should be left with families after reviewing the information.
